Along with Walker’s take on his fit with the Bears, here are three things we learned.1. Along with switching positions, Teven Jenkins is focused on building durability.Jenkins received the call from offensive line coach Chris Morgan about five minutes after the Bears signed free-agent right guard Nate Davis in March. The Bears were going to move Jenkins to left guard, his second position switch in a year after they moved him from tackle to right guard in 2022.Jenkins, 25, embraced the opportunity to improve his craft at a single position, and he got to work on making the switch before the team met for OTAs.“It gave me time to actually work on my footwork and my mentality,” Jenkins said. “I got back in...

Roger Payne, who found out that whales could sing, dies at 88. Listen to his discovery

By PATRICK WHITTLE (Associated Press)Roger Payne, the scientist who spurred a worldwide environmental conservation movement with his discovery that whales could sing, has died. He was 88.Payne made the discovery in 1967 during a research trip to Bermuda in which a Navy engineer provided him with a recording of curious underwater sounds documented while listening for Russian submarines. Payne identified the haunting tones as songs whales sing to one another. He saw the discovery of whale song as a chance to spur interest in saving the giant animals, who were disappearing from the planet. Payne would produce the album “Songs of the Humpback Whale” in 1970. A surprise hit, the record galvanized a global movement to end the practice of commercial whale hunting and save the whales from extinction.Payne was cognizant from the start that whale song represented a chance to get the public interested in protecting an animal previously considered little more than a resource, curiosi...

Red Sox notebook: No RISP, no reward

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:02:59 GMT

Despite some messy innings from Kutter Crawford and Justin Garza at the beginning and end of Tuesday night’s 7-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies, it’s not the Red Sox pitching staff who should be fidgeting on the hot seat amidst the team’s recent struggles.Since May 17, the starting rotation owns the fifth-best ERA (3.60) in the Majors, with two earned runs or fewer in 18 of their last 25 games, and the bullpen owns the ninth-best ERA (3.65) since May 16.This stretch of agonizingly close games is almost entire due to a subdued lineup (and poor defense). 11 of their last 17 games were decided by one or two runs. Five of their last eight games were decided by one, including each of their previous three, all of which were extra-inning contests.Over their first 13 games of the month, the Red Sox left 103 men on base. They’re averaging 7.83 stranded runners per game, up from 6.88 in May, and 6.6 in April. Conversely, their average runs scored per game has plummeted e...

The Orioles have praised their depth all season. A recent run of injuries has prompted them to continually put it on display. Before Wednesday’s game with the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore made a pair of roster moves to alter its bench and bullpen. A day after the Orioles selected the contract of catcher Mark Kolozsvary when they placed first baseman Ryan Mountcastle on the 10-day injured list with vertigo, they first optioned Kolozsvary to recall infielder Joey Ortiz, their No. 5 prospect according to Baseball America, then designated the 27-year-old backstop for assignment to select right-hander Reed Garrett’s contract. Reliever Austin Voth was put on the 15-day IL with right elbow discomfort.Manager Brandon Hyde said Voth, 30, has dealt with the elbow issue since spring training, but his appearance Tuesday, in which four of the five batters he faced reached base, prompted the Orioles to shut him down. Fed Chair Powell sees progress on inflation, though not quickly enough

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:02:59 GMT

By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER (AP Economics Writer)WASHINGTON (AP) — Inflation may be cooling — just not yet fast enough for the Federal Reserve.Chair Jerome Powell offered a nuanced view Wednesday of how the Fed intends to address its core challenge at a time when inflation is both way below its peak but still well above the central bank’s 2% target: Give it more time, and maybe some help from additional interest rate hikes. Yet on a hopeful note, Powell also suggested that the trends that are needed to further slow inflation, from lower rents to slower-growing wages, are starting to click into place. As a result, the Fed decided Wednesday to forgo another increase in its benchmark interest rate, leaving it at about 5.1%. The pause followed 10 straight hikes in 15 months — the fastest series of increases in four decades. By leaving rates alone, at least for now, Powell and other top Fed officials hope to use the extra time to more fully assess how higher borrowing ...
