DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hoping to cut into Donald Trump’s support at a major Iowa gathering of evangelical Christians, several of his top rivals on Saturday mostly avoided direct criticism of him on abortion and other issues key to social conservatives. The Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual banquet is traditionally a marquee event on the Republican primary calendar. The primary field’s split on abortion was once again on display, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis saying restrictions on the procedure should be left to the stages — a position similar to Trump’s — while former Vice President Mike Pence referred to Trump as his “former running mate” and said he was wrong to oppose a national abortion ban. While the audience was overwhelmingly anti-abortion, Pence’s push for a 15-week ban ...

Twins fall into first-inning hole, never recover in loss to White Sox

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:52:15 GMT

CHICAGO — For most of his start, Pablo López looked like the top-of-the-rotation starter that he has been all season. But that, the version of López that the Twins are well used to seeing at that point, came after a turbulent first inning in which the starter gave up five runs.Though they put up five runs of their own in the final two innings, the Twins never recovered from that hole on Saturday night, falling 7-6 to the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Cleveland Guardians also won their game, meaning the Twins’ magic number to clinch the American League Central Division remains at seven.“The first inning was just one of those where good pitches got hit for infield singles, broken-bat singles and then bad pitches got hit for homers with people on base,” López said. “But that’s just the way baseball is at times.”López was one out away from getting out of that inning when the White Sox (57-92) struck. Designated hitter Eloy Jiménez got ahold of a fastball, sending ...

An increase in bear sightings and break-ins throughout Sierra Madre has some residents on edge, with at least one community event recently canceled over safety concerns.Officials said there have been over 30 calls reporting bears in the past month alone.Residents met with city officials and wildlife experts on Saturday at the Sierra Madre Public Library to discuss ways to approach the potential dangers.Recent sightings in the area include bears spotted in backyard swimming pools, exploring front porches and breaking into homes to enjoy a snack in the kitchen. As bear sightings and encounters become more frequent in Southern California, wildlife officials are focusing on ways residents and animals can coexist peacefully.“It’s typical to see an increase in bear sightings this time of year because bears are entering hyperphagia where they are trying to get 20,000 calories a day to pack on the fat for denning and hibernation," explained Mackenzie Rich, a Human Wildlife Conflict Spe...
