Stock market today: Wall Street ticks down early ahead of spending, inflation reports

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:18:39 GMT

Wall Street retreated modestly early Monday as investors look ahead to updates on consumer spending and inflation in the U.S. and other nations. Futures for the Dow Jones industrials and the S&P 500 each ticked down less than 0.2% before the bell.Markets were mostly quiet coming off a holiday shortened week, the fourth straight winning week for Wall Street.Traders have recently grown cautiously optimistic that inflation has cooled enough for the Federal Reserve to finally be done with its market-crunching hikes to interest rates. The Fed will get another big update this week when the government on Thursday releases its October report for a key inflation measure tracked by the central bank.Tuesday’s consumer confidence report from the Conference Board will give economists data on how Americans are feeling about the economy as the holiday shopping season gets underway.Elsewhere, in Europe at midday France’s CAC 40 edged 0.1%, Germany’s DAX fell 0.2% and Britain...

Barcelona looks to regain best form and secure return to knockout stage of Champions League

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:18:39 GMT

MADRID (AP) — A win against Porto will be enough to put Barcelona back in the knockout rounds of the Champions League after two consecutive group-stage eliminations. It may not be enough to ease the pressure on coach Xavi Hernández, who has struggled to get his team to play well recently.Barcelona is coming off a stretch that includes a 1-0 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in its last Champions League game, and a 1-1 draw at Rayo Vallecano in its previous Spanish league match. The team has even produced lackluster performances when winning recent matches.“Things did not go as expected lately,” Xavi said. “Against Rayo it was better, but we have lacked continuity. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for us. It can be a turning point. I really believe we will be playing better again. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t even be here.”Barcelona will advance with a win, or with a draw if Shakhtar doesn’t beat Antwerp in the other Group H match on Tuesday. The Catalan club failed to reach the kn...

Cyber Monday marks the year’s biggest online shopping day, and one more chance to save on gifts

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 13:18:39 GMT

Consumers are scouring the internet for online deals as they begin to cap off the five-day post-Thanksgiving shopping bonanza with Cyber Monday. Even though e-commerce is now part and parcel of our everyday lives and much of the holiday shopping season, Cyber Monday –- a term coined back in 2005 by the National Retail Federation –- continues to be the biggest online shopping day of the year, thanks to the deals and the hype the industry has created to fuel it. For several major retailers, the “Cyber Monday” sale is a days-long event that begins over the weekend. Amazon’s, for example, kicked off on Saturday and runs through Monday. Target’s two-day event began overnight on Sunday, while Arkansas-based Walmart kicked off its most recent discounts Sunday evening. Consumer spending for Cyber Week — the five major shopping days between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday — provides a strong indication on how much shoppers are willing to spend during the holiday season. Shoppers ha...

DENVER (AP) — The third and final trial over the 2019 death of Elijah McClain after he was stopped by police in suburban Denver involves homicide and manslaughter charges against two paramedics. It's a prosecution experts say enters largely uncharted legal territory by levying criminal charges against medical first responders.McClain had been stopped and put into a neck hold by police that left him weakened when the paramedics arrived and injected him with the powerful sedative ketamine. The 23-year-old Black man went into cardiac arrest on his way to the hospital and was pronounced dead three days later.Initially no one was charged because the coroner’s office could not determine exactly how McClain died. But in 2021, social justice protests over the 2020 murder of George Floyd drew renewed attention to McClain's case, prompting an indictment against the paramedics and three officers. 1 officer found guilty of homicide in Elijah McClain case, 2nd officer acquitted Jury selection ...

Honda recalls more than 300K Accords, HR-Vs over seat belt issues

(CNN) — Honda is recalling more than 300,000 vehicles over faulty seat belts. In a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Tuesday, the automaker said some front seat belts in 2023-2024 Accords and HR-Vs have missing pretensioner rivets. A pretensioner is the seat belt component that tightens it in place during an accident, preventing the seat occupant from flying forward. Defective pretensioners increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision, Honda said in the notice.According to the NHTSA, wearing a seat belt in a passenger car decreases the likelihood of death by 45% and reduces the risk of moderate and critical injury by 50%.In a safety recall report also filed with the NHTSA, Honda said it received the initial complaint about the seat belt issue in May. However, it “received the affected parts and began to investigate the issue” on September 20.As of November 16, Honda said it has not received any reports of injuries or death...
