(CNN) — Federal agencies are making final preparations with the government on the brink of a shutdown and congressional lawmakers racing against Saturday&#’;s critical midnight deadline – as House Speaker Kevin McCarthy mounts a last-minute push to avert the lapse in funding.McCarthy announced that the House will vote on a 45-day short-term spending bill Saturday, and it will include the natural disaster aid that the White House requested. Asked if he is concerned that a member, including Republican Rep. Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:06:01 GMT

Who says wishes don’t come true? After the long-running Downtown Ice rink in San Jose went on hiatus last year, the San Jose Downtown Association got the message that people considered it a vital part of their holiday season. So it’s back this year and will open in the Circle of Palms on Nov. 17.Last year, the company operating the ice rink pulled out too late for the city to find a comparable replacement. It was fine as a replacement, but it was obvious people were hoping for something, well, cooler.“People enjoyed roller skating, but we heard loud and clear that families and friends from all parts of Northern and Central California missed their tradition of coming to skate at our ice rink,” said Tricia Lee McNabb, who has managed rink operations since 1997.Livermore-based Special Ice, ...
